White Cop Suspended When Video Of Black Women Emerges, But Did He Deserve It?

Is this white cop’s suspension fair to him?

Fort Worth Police Officer William Martin has been placed on restrictive duty status after a video emerged of him arresting two black women. He has been suspended for 10 days without pay. The Forth Worth PD is conducting an investigation of Martin’s use of a stun gun against one of the women’s backs, an act that was captured on video (below.)

Reportedly, Jacqueline Craig, a 46-year-old mother, told Martin that one of the neighbors had choked her 7-year-old son after he threw paper on the ground. Allegedly, Martin responded, “Why don’t you teach your son not to litter?” An argument ensued, and Martin ended up arresting two women.

After viewing the video, the Police Internal Affairs investigation stated that Martin had inappropriate contact with the women and that he had handled the matter with discourtesy.

Fort Worth Police Chief Joel Fitzgerald says that, despite the incident, Martin is ready to go back to work. He will undergo additional training and will patrol the same neighborhood.

One attorney, S. Lee Merritt, does not agree with the decision and posted his protest on Twitter:

As you may expect, tensions are high in Fort Worth over Martin’s actions and his treatment by the Police Department. People on both sides of the issue are claiming injustice.

Did Martin mistreat the women? If so, was the 10-day suspension without pay fair? Watch the video below and decide for yourself.

Hopefully, the issue will deescalate soon.
