Teacher Arrested, But Not For Sex With Students

A 52 year-old teacher has been fired from her substitute teaching position with the Lexington School District just outside Columbia, South Carolina. But at least it wasn’t because she was having sex with her students. No, this time it was because she got sick in class and was vomiting during class hours.

Well, that is not exactly true. It seems that some of her students became concerned after Judith Elizabeth Richards-Gartee became visibly sick in class. At least one of the students contacted the office and following a brief investigation, Ms. Richards-Gartee was relieved of her duties.

But that is not the end of our story, it seems that police were notified after office personnel noticed what appeared to be the smell of alcohol on the teacher. A spokesperson for the school district said Ms. Richards-Gartee allegedly drank boxed wine before vomiting in class at Brookland-Cayce High School.

When Lexington police arrived, they discovered a box of wine hanging out of her handbag, confirming student reports that she had been drinking during the morning class. The Lexington County sheriff’s department said in a news release that Richards-Gartee was found to be in possession of alcohol and charged with disorderly conduct. School administrators state that she worked for Kelly Educational Services, which provides substitute teachers for the district, per WISTV.

Police said the Administration responded immediately, removing the substitute from the classroom and sending her to the School Resource Officer. The District has been advised that law enforcement has filed criminal charges against the Kelly employee.

The police report states that Richards-Gartee threw up and was unable to stand. She had to be removed from the classroom in a wheelchair. She was taken to the nurse’s office and brought to the Lexington Medical Center for a check-up. A court date has not yet been set to hear the charges against Ms. Richards-Gartee.
