Nurse Breaks Hospital Rule, Gives Dying Patient Last Request

75-year-old, Carsten Hansen, was dying from a ruptured aortic aneurysm that landed him for days in the hospital. His condition requires a complicated surgery and a lot of hospital downtime to recover after.

Unfortunately, Carsten was already too weak and sick to have the surgery and without it, he wouldn’t be able to survive. Doctors told him that the internal bleeding would potentially kill him within days, even hours.

But everyone has things that they want to accomplish or see before they die and Carsten certainly had one in mind.

There was truly nothing left for Carsten to do except wait for his life to end but with the very limited time to reflect on his life, Carsten decided to ask his nurse for his final wishes, and they were surprisingly simple. All Carsten wanted was one more cigarette and a glass of wine.

The Denmark hospital where Carsten was staying haas a strict no-smoking policy in place, but the man’s doctors and nurses figured they could break a few rules to give consideration to the patient.

What they did was wheel out the man onto his balcony so he could light up his last cigarette, sip a fine wine, while taking in the beautiful sunset. He also got to spend time with his loved ones.

“It was a very cozy and relaxed atmosphere. Of course they were relatives also affected by the fact that he was going to die, and they were sad. But it was cozy and there was humor.” he said.

Not too long after his last requests, Carsten passed away peacefully in his hospital bed. It’s nice to know he left the world at ease with the help of his last wish being granted.

Carsten’s nurses shared his touching story on the hospital’s Facebook page that went over 5,000 shares and more than 76,000 likes, it is clear that many people were touched by Carsten’s story.

It is amazing how Carsten was treated by such kind and caring hospital staff, who was ready to break the rules to ensure his last moments were happy ones.
