Working in the service industry can be very hard work, especially the restaurant business. Servers are among the lowest paid hourly workers in our country, and even when they do everything right, many diners often hold the responsible for things beyond their control, and the tips they depend on can suffer.

Well, we just found a story on social media about a couple who think they have stumbled on to a great new trick to get better service. But when you find out what they do, you are going think they are just being cheap, petty, and mean.

This week, a Facebook user named Tyler Anne-Marie shared a cruel trick that she and her husband use to get better service in restaurants.

Their premise is that when you sit down, you should place five 1 dollar bills on the table and every time the wait staff makes a mistake, remove one from the pile. Whatever is left on the table is what they get as a tip.

Well, first of all, unless your dinner bill is only twenty-five dollars or less, that five dollar “tip” is a lousy tip anyway. See, servers are required by the Internal Revenue Service to declare twenty percent of their checks as tips, to begin with. So, if they make less than that in actual tips, they can lose money.

Second, there are plenty of things that go into a dining experience that is outside the control of a server, from the time it takes for food to be prepared, to the quality of the food, to the temperature and noise levels of a busy restaurant. And yet, they are often penalized for these things.
