Democrat Who Opposed Food Stamp Reform Indicted For Food Stamp Fraud

Arizona state  Rep. Cecilia Velasquez, who had voted against a bill sponsored by  Rep. Anthony Kern, that would have reined in food stamp fraud has been arrested on three felony counts of food stamp fraud,  unlawful use of food stamps, fraudulent schemes and practices, and theft.  The Arizona Department of Economic Security began investigating Velasquez in 2014 after receiving a tip about her theft of benefits.  She is accused of stealing $1,726 worth of food stamp benefits.  It is unknown if there she is responsible for more fraud.

Velasquez just voted against a bill in February that would detect the same type of fraud she was arrested for.

Rep Kern commented:

“It is appalling that an elected official representing the people of Arizona would steal from the poor, while consistently saying she is trying to help the poor.”

Josh Archambault, senior fellow with the Foundation for Government Accountability also commented:

“There is so much low-hanging fruit to catch in this country when it comes to welfare fraud, and sadly, every day that goes by without reform allows for abuse and steals resources from the truly needy.”

Velasquez’s office refused to comment on the charges.

Instead of the democrats having their national convention in Philadelphia, perhaps they should move the venue to Sing Sing.
