This is not just another first wedding dance video. This may be the greatest first dance wedding video.
Kiersten Downs and Thomas Martineau had tried to be married twice before. The first time, the wedding was canceled because of issues with space and rentals and all of the other things that can bog down a special day.
So they regrouped and set a new date. Unfortunately, a week before the planned nuptials Martineau got sick.
This was not a cold, this was hospital and surgery sick. So again they put things on hold. But, they would try one more time.
Downs, a student, spent the time leading up to the wedding on her dissertation. That left Martineau to work on a project of his own.
He did need a little help, though, and for that, he enlisted Steve Hill of Stay In Step Spinal Cord Injury Rehabilitation Center. Martineau met Hill when he was doing rehab for injuries he received in a motorcycle accident.
In 2008, Martineau was involved in an accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Most of his days were spent in a wheelchair.
He was determined though that his wedding day would not be one of them. Finally the stars aligned and, in front of a crowd of family and friends, they said, “I do.”
At the time of the first dance, Downs could not find her new husband anywhere. They were to make an entrance together and then begin to dance.
She was finally told that everything was fine, he had just been in the restroom. She was instructed to listen for the music and when it started, make her entrance.
He would be waiting there for her. She never could have imagined that she would find him “standing.”
Together with Hill, Martineau came up with a harness that could be suspended from the rafters, so that he could dance with his wife on their wedding day. Pretty amazing way to start a life together don’t you think?
