Most celebrities choose to stay out of the limelight, but that is not the case for singer John Legend. He has taken sides with Colin Kaepernick and stated that he doesn’t “truly love” the National Anthem in some recent tweets. He also said that he is one of the best at singing the song.

John Legend waded into the Colin Kaepernick controversy on Tuesday, saying although he is “one of the best” at singing the national anthem, he doesn’t truly love it.

“For those defending the current anthem, do you really truly love that song? I don’t and I’m very good at singing it. Like, one of the best,” the award-winning singer tweeted. The tweet comes in defense of the San Francisco 49ers quarterback, who refused to stand alongside his teammates for the national anthem last Friday.

“I agree that his protest wasn’t about the lyrics. It’s about the value of the lives of people of color in America,” Legend tweeted in response to one of his fans. “But his protest also moved many people to re-examine the song itself.” “You can love the country and what it stands for without loving a particular song,” he wrote.

Kaepernick justified his controversial act as a protest against police brutality and the mistreatment of blacks in America.

“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color,” the quarterback said after the game. “To me, this is bigger than football, and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”

This is a bad move on John Legend’s part. Why get involved in such a controversial issue and open yourself up to that criticism? So what if he doesn’t care for the National Anthem, he doesn’t need to tell anyone that. He should have just kept it to himself for the sake of his reputation and career. In any case, for someone who has been given the American dream, he should be a little more supportive of his own country and all of its traditions.
