A Utah mom was arrested for felony child abuse after she allegedly took her 7-year-old son into a Walmart bathroom and pulled two of his teeth with pliers.
Mother of seven, Jeannine Isom, 47, purchased hand sanitizer and needle-nose pliers before pulling her son’s two upper front teeth in the Walmart store in Cedar Hills, Utah, the Daily Mail reports. According to police, the boy’s older brother and an employee at the store heard him screaming in the bathroom and managed to get him out of the restroom.
Isom did not use any anesthetic to dull the pain of pulling the teeth, prosecutors said. The mother, who a family website says is a music teacher, has a history of mental illness and was charged with disorderly conduct in February 2016.
The 7-year-old is reported to have told his brother that one of his teeth was loose, but the other was only slightly loose. The American Fork Police Department’s Sgt. Cameron Paul said the child’s teeth came out in multiple pieces.
“When she proceeded to extract them, they didn’t come out in one whole piece. There were multiple pieces. So that illustrates that they were still very attached to this child’s mouth,” Paul said, according to Tribune Media Wire.
In another story of reported child abuse at a Utah Walmart, a mother allegedly locked her children in a car trunk while she went shopping at the store, CNN Wire reports.
A witness said that she saw Tori Castillo, 39, lock her children, aged 2 and 5, in her car trunk while she went into the store in Riverdale.
According to a woman identified only as Heidi, who helped the children escape, she was unloading groceries with a friend when she heard noises coming from the nearby trunk. Heidi walked to the car and put her ear against the trunk.
“I could hear some kids crying,” Heidi recalled. “I turned to my friend and I’m like, ‘There’s people in this trunk. There’s kids in this trunk!'”
Heidi and her friend, along with two other women, tried to help the children escape. One of the other women who was helping had reportedly seen Castillo lock the kids in the trunk before going inside.
“I started talking to the little girl that I could hear screaming,” said Heidi. “She was [yelling], ‘Mom, let me out! Let me out! Mom! Help!’ She was screaming, crying.”
When they managed to open the trunk using its emergency latch, Heidi said the children were sweaty and terrified.
“Both kids just came out … they just jumped at us,” she said. “One lady took the 2-year-old, I took the 5-year-old.”
“It was kind of heartbreaking to see that somebody could do something so cruel,” she added.
When Castillo came out of the store, Heidi said, “The only explanation she had was, ‘My babysitter didn’t show up.'”
Castillo was arrested on four counts of child abuse with physical injury along with one count of theft. According to the Division of Child and Family Services, the two children were “turned over to a responsible party.”
