The Doctors Were Expecting a Normal Delivery Until This Came Out

When Chelsea Phillips entered the delivery room, little did she know what kind of stir she would create.  Nor were the doctors expecting anything out of the ordinary.  But the moment Chelsea gave birth to Silas, it was the talk of the delivery room and soon the entire hospital.  Nurses were snapping pictures.  No one had expected this to come out of the mother.
Little Silas was born totally encased in his amniotic sac.  Normally they burst during childbirth.  The baby was able to breath through the placenta and umbilical cord.  The doctors had to quickly free him from the sac and get him to start breathing.

This is a true medical rarity.

Dr. William Binder, a neonatologist at Cedars Sinai Medical Center who helped deliver Silas, quickly snapped a photo of the baby in his sac. “… We caught our breath,” he said. “It really felt like a moment of awe.”

Silas was born in his water bag, with the placenta and umbilical cord still tucked inside. In the amazing photo you’re about to see, Silas is still in a fetal position, with his arms and his legs curled up.

Until the bag was broken, Silas was still getting oxygen through the placenta. The doctors needed to work fast to get the baby out of the sac and breathing.

Today, doctors say baby Silas, now 10-weeks-old, is doing well and should be headed home in about a month, right around his due date.
