Top 10 things you need to know if you got a drone for Christmas.

So you opened up that perfectly shaped box to unveil a drone!!! Welcome to a new obsession, hobby, love, meaning to life……. but, before you get too excited, here are 10 things you need to know:

  1. There are rules when flying, no matter who you are. These rules include:

*Follow community-based safety guidelines, as developed by organizations such as the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA).

*Fly no higher than 400 feet and remain below any surrounding obstacles when possible.

*Keep your drone in eyesight at all times, and use an observer to assist if needed.

*Remain well clear of and do not interfere with manned aircraft operations, and you must see and avoid other aircraft and obstacles at all times.

*Do not intentionally fly over unprotected persons or moving vehicles, and remain at least 25 feet away from individuals and vulnerable property.

*Do not fly within five miles of an airport.

*Fly no closer than two nautical miles from a heliport with a published instrument flight procedure.

*Do not fly in adverse weather conditions such as in high winds or reduced visibility.

*Do not fly under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Ensure the operating environment is safe and that the operator is competent and proficient in the operation of the drone.

*Do not fly near or over sensitive infrastructure or property such as power stations, water treatment facilities, correctional facilities, heavily traveled roadways, government facilities, etc.

*Check and follow all local laws and ordinances before flying over private property.

*Do not conduct surveillance or photograph persons in areas where there is an expectation of privacy without the individual’s permission (see AMA’s privacy policy). You need to register your drone. You can do so through the FAA website here:

http://www.faa.gov/uas/registration/

Read every manual! It may seem tiresome, but it is important. Know what you are doing, educate yourself.Make sure to always check weather conditions before flying, especially wind speeds!

You will need to get a case eventually. You will probably want other accessories as well. Be sure to do your research and find the high quality items. Do not buy off brand: batteries, propellers or parts for your drone.

LiPo batteries are no joke. If you know nothing about LiPo batteries, drone batteries, make sure to do some research. These types of batteries can be dangerous if they are not properly stored or taken care of.

Never fly near an emergency situation. You do not want to get in the way of someone else’s safety.

If you want to begin making money with your drone, there are additional rules you must follow. A great resource to help you learn is http://www.makedronemoney.com

Don’t fly at night. Flying at night can be very dangerous. It may seem cool, but it is not worth your money or safety.

Stay updated on all of the laws, regulations, and news. It is changing all of the time.

Don’t be stupid…
