The Olympic Games for the most part have started with Friday nights opening ceremonies being the highlight; but the more darker side has not abated, with all the technical, financial, political and environmental issues, we have had our first killing take place. We knew it was going to happen, the only question was when, and now how many before the Games conclude. I would think many want tonights ceremonies to be the Closing Ceremonies Instead.
According to Inside the games.biz:
A Russian Diplomat shot and killed a mugger after a brief struggle. Incidents like this occur on the Avenue Das Americas. It is particularly worrying because it is a main transport link between venues and hotels around the Olympic hub.
Muggers are known to target static vehicles in traffic jams, as well as buses and other public transport.
The Rio Homicide Department have said the official “reacted to an attempted assault”.
“The vice consul got into a physical struggle with the assailant and during the fight the aggressor’s weapon fired shots,” they said.
“The assailant died of his wounds on the spot.”
I can only assume that if anyone still wishes to attend the games, there are plenty of tickets available. Can you imagine attending the events at the velodrome, which was built in the jungle, and somehow you would have to find your way there! I can just see myself like Michael Douglas in Romancing the Stone navigating the forest. Are you going to watch ?
