One US Attorney Won’t Resign, Defies AG Sessions and President Trump

The U.S. attorney for Manhattan has declined to resign despite a demand from the Justice Department.

Preet Bharara declined to tender his resignation on Friday part of a demand from the Justice Department for 46 U.S. attorneys to resign, according to multiple reports.

Bharara previously met with President Trump at Trump Tower before the inauguration and had told reporters Trump asked him to stay on.

Reports have said that the White House hasn’t planned what to do next.

While it is common for presidents to ask any political holdovers to resign, the abruptness of the demand has caused criticism from some Democrats and law enforcement officials. Reports say that U.S. attorneys had no idea they were going to be asked to resign on Friday.

Let’s not forget that Preet Bharara was the US Attorney who prosecuted Dinesh D’Souza more harshly than anyone else ever prosecuted for what D’Souza was being charged. Many knew that this prosecution was an act of revenge from Barack Obama, because of D’Souza’s movie, 2016: Obama’s America, which got under Obama’s skin, enough to use the justice system to target Dinesh.

Dinesh points out in his book, Stealing America, that Preet Bharara was offered to be Eric Holder’s replacement as Attorney General of the United States so long as he got a conviction in the Dinesh D’Souza case and he was sentenced to significant prison time. D’Souza plead guilty and sentenced to go nightly to a halfway house for 8 months. Since Bharara didn’t come through he never got the job, instead going to Loretta Lynch. Incidentally, many thought the Lynch choice was a smack in Bharara’s face since she was US Attorney for the Eastern District of New York. So close, and yet so far.
