I love my country, that is a given, but as my Grandfather taught me, you can learn something from everyone. Let’s face it, our school system is a failure, from the top, being unionized under the government down to the lunch room, where a child can go without lunch because of .40cents, or sharing a bathroom with someone who thinks they are something they are not. But why digress? Let’s look at the school system in Finland and draw a parallel and see who come out more prepared in life.
Unlike in the United States, where many schools are slashing recess, schoolchildren in Finland have a mandatory 15-minute outdoor free-play break every hour of every day. Fresh air, nature and regular physical activity breaks are considered engines of learning. According to one Finnish maxim, “There is no bad weather, Only inadequate clothing. “William Doyle enrolled his seven-year-old son in a primary school in Joensuu, Finland. One evening I asked my son what he did for gym that day. “They sent us into the woods with a map and compass and we had to find our way out,” he said.
Can you imagine what our schools would be like if we taught respect and common sense to our children, and the teachers were defended and protected in their daily duties. We spend day upon day showing children nothing of substance, and give them all the power to abuse and insult, and you wonder why they walk the streets and disrespect all that come in their path. Why is Home schooling is on the rise? Because responsible parents do not trust the system to do what is right for their children, and the others use it for day care and hope for the best. What do you think?
