Nestlé, the world’s largest food and beverage corporation, raised prices by 9.8% in the first three months of the year as inflationary pressures increased input costs for the company.
The Swiss company, which owns Purina, Gerber, Nescafe, and KitKat, stated in an earnings report that the price rises in numerous areas around the world were caused by “significant cost inflation.” The firm’s Latin American and North American markets increased by 13.4% and 12.4%, respectively, while the European market increased by 10.7% and the Chinese market increased by 3.9%.
“Nestlé delivered strong organic growth in the first quarter, as our teams worked diligently to protect volume and ensure resilient mix,” Nestlé CEO Mark Schneider said in the earnings report. “Portfolio optimization efforts and responsible pricing helped to offset the ongoing pressures from two years of cost inflation.”
Meanwhile, the business claimed 5.6% global sales growth and a 0.5% decline in real internal growth, a number that the company claims represent the impact of volume increases or decreases on sales, weighted by the relative worth of each unit sold.

In the United States, inflation rose 5.0% between March 2022 and March 2023, a respite from the 9.1% inflation rate recorded last summer. Nonetheless, food inflation continues to outpace other categories: the cost of food at home increased 8.4% year on year as of last month, according to Bureau of Labor Statistics statistics.
Other food producers have warned that rising price levels in the category are likely to continue for the foreseeable future. In an earnings call two months ago, Walmart U.S. CEO John Furner agreed that food inflation “has been the most stubborn” cause of elevated pricing levels and that only “a little bit” has dropped in the past six months.
To combat rising prices, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon has stated that households that formerly shopped at more expensive grocery stores were shifting their business to the grocery titan. McDonald’s CFO Ian Borden also claimed that the fast food restaurant chain’s lower-cost options had attracted new customers.
“We can actually look at what is our share amongst low-income consumers; we’re gaining share right now among low-income consumers. And that goes back to the fact that we are positioned as the leading brand in terms of value for money and affordability,” Borden said during an earnings call. “To the degree that we end up in a more challenging economic environment in 2023, that’s going to be helpful to our business trends.”
Recent drops in headline inflation have occurred as officials at the Federal Reserve raise target federal funds rates, which reduce price increases but stifle economic activity due to the increasing cost of borrowing cash for households and companies. Officials had earlier set near-zero interest rates in order to bolster the economy during the lockdown-induced slump.

President Joe Biden has consistently claimed that his administration is to blame for the slowing of price increases in specific product categories, despite the fact that inflation rates remain three to four times higher than when he took office.
“We are making progress in the fight against inflation,” he commented in a statement. “The fight against inflation isn’t over, and every day my administration is working to give families more breathing room.”
