Republican Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt signed legislation prohibiting sex change procedures on children on Monday, joining a growing list of red states taking action to safeguard children from the life-altering therapies.
The law restricts puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones for youngsters, as well as elective double mastectomies on girls who identify as guys.

“Last year, I called for a statewide ban on all irreversible gender transition surgeries and hormone therapies on minors so I am thrilled to sign this into law today and protect our kids,” Stitt said in a statement. “We cannot turn a blind eye to what’s happening across our nation, and as governor I am proud to stand up for what’s right and ban life-altering transition surgeries on children in the state of Oklahoma.”
Stitt had previously lobbied Oklahoma lawmakers to approve similar legislation and tried to withdraw funds from Oklahoma Youngsters’ Hospital at OU Health when it was revealed that the hospital was supplying transgender youngsters with cross-sex hormones.
The Republican governor has also passed laws mandating pupils to use the bathroom that corresponds to their biological sex and to participate on the sports team that corresponds to their biological sex.
Before the bill was signed, the ACLU of Oklahoma promised to sue, as have other ACLU-affiliated organizations in other states.
“Gender-affirming care is a critical part of helping transgender adolescents succeed, establish healthy relationships with their friends and family, live authentically as themselves, and dream about their futures. If this bill is signed into law, we will defend the rights of transgender youth in court, just as we have done in other states engaging in this anti-science and discriminatory fearmongering,” Lambda Legal, the ACLU, and the ACLU of Oklahoma said in a statement.
Oklahoma became the 16th Republican-led state to pass such legislation, even as Democrat-led states want to become “refuges” for transgender treatments. Judges have halted the execution of the law in several states with restrictions, including Arkansas and Alabama, while the Department of Justice has sued Tennessee, claiming that the law violates the 14th Amendment.
Tennessee Attorney General Jonathan Skrmetti stated that the state would “vigorously” defend the law. “The federal government has joined the ACLU and a top New York law firm in opposing a bipartisan law that safeguards children from irreversible harm.” Skrmetti said in a statement, “I welcome the opportunity to litigate these issues and vigorously defend Tennessee’s laws.”
