Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida defeated the awakened Biden administration with a resounding triumph. Gaetz has fought to prevent the US Department of Defense from endorsing or supporting drag queen performances on military installations. His insistence forced the Pentagon’s top brass to postpone a planned drag performance.
Gaetz called the cancellation a huge victory, saying, “The Department of Defense (DOD) canceled a scheduled “child-friendly” drag show after I demanded answers from Secretary of Defense Austin and General Milley! Drag shows should not be taking place on military installations with taxpayer dollars, PERIOD!

Gaetz grilled Secretary Austin, asking why drag queen performances was being held on military installations and how much public money should be allocated to support drag queen story hours. He continued by listing a number of military bases that have previously been used to hold drag queen performances and story hours.
Secretary Austin merely stated that the Drag acts are not something the military supports or funds in place of being asked how the shows were paid for.

After learning that a “child-friendly” drag show was going to take place on a Nevada military base on June 1, Gaetz wrote a follow-up letter to Secretary Austin and General Milley on May 23 after they both claimed they were unaware of and opposed to drag shows. He questioned whether either of the two service members had given their approval for the impending event and whether the base would be paying for it. Additionally, he enquired from both of them whether it was okay for kids to see a sexualized drag show.

Gaetz posed the following four issues:
June 1, 2023; Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada.
Nellis Air Force Base has announced a so-called “family-friendly” drag organized by the Nellis LGBTQ+ Pride Council for June 1, 2023. In this latest outright attack on children, this event is being advertised as having no minimum age requirement. I request answers to the following questions:
a. You both testified before the House Armed Service Committee, stating: “Drag shows and drag events are not something the DoD supports or fund” and “I’d like to take a look at that material … I don’t agree with that. These things shouldn’t be happening.” Given those statements, has this drag event scheduled for June 1, 2023, on Nellis Air Force Base been reviewed and approved by either of you?
b. Will the base provide funding for logistical support of this event?
c. Does the DoD feel it’s appropriate for children to attend a sexualized drag performance?
d. Why are base commanders defying your intent and direction by facilitating drag events?
He referred to the queries he posed to the pair on March 29 regarding advancing and funding agendas unrelated to military readiness in the letter, stating,
“I questioned you about diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs within the Department of Defense (DoD). I find it completely unacceptable that DoD is using taxpayer dollars to fund DEI programs that are divisive in nature.”
Gaetz stated that DOD funds should be used for mission-critical activities as opposed to contentious ones.
He went on to explain that he was glad the two men did not support drag story hours or shows and that he was giving them proof of how the DOD had improperly used taxpayer money to support drag events.
“To aid you in executing the agreed-upon elimination of DoD-funded drag events, I have enclosed supplementary documents that further highlight the DoD’s pervasive and persistent use of taxpayer dollars for drag events. I have also included questions throughout this correspondence, which I require answers to so that the House Armed Services Committee can conduct further oversight of this matter.”
Gaetz listed six occasions in which the DOD supported drag events.
Gaetz asked Austin and Milley five more questions, including whether the DOD had any financial ties to drag queens and whether it had ever held military personnel responsible for organizing drag events.
On May 31, NBC News announced that future drag events were being canceled, reporting that “Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Mark Milley, told the Air Force it is not Pentagon policy to fund drag shows on bases, and the show should be canceled or moved off base.”
