What would you feel if your children didn’t eat the food you prepared for him in School? You’d be upset and worried at the same time, right? But what if you find out that the food you prepare has been thrown away by their teachers because of their new style of eating “healthy”?
The Durham School District’s new eating healthy initiative surprised a lot of parents knowing that the food they prepare for their children was being checked by the teachers and chose specific parts of their packed lunch which the student is only allowed to eat.
Elaina Daoust, a mother of two district students, says she became “infuriated” last year when her son was told he could not eat his morning snack which contained a small piece of banana bread, because it contained chocolate chips.
He was told that he would instead have to eat the grapes from his lunch. And it was one of the reasons why she decided to transfer her son to a different school.
One of the parents, Mrs. Brangman was also very mad when she find out that her daughter haven’t eaten anything because her packed lunch was thrown away because it contains pizza and was replaced by orange instead but her daughter didn’t eat it.
More than 30 district parents have shared stories about their children having food taken away and have nothing to do with that. It was really disappointing for them knowing that they could take care of their children’s health and they should be the one to discipline them and teach them their limitations and whats good and bad for their health. Although the teachers are there to guide their students, teach them what is good but never force and take it away from them.
As Mrs. Brangman said “I felt it was way more unhealthy for a child not to eat at all, than to eat a granola bar with chocolate”.
