Local authorities in Orange City say they got a call to respond on an incident at Walmart on Veterans Memorial Highway where Sharnett Barton, 30, was arrested after carjacking a woman in Sanford around 5 p.m. Monday. She then drove a stolen vehicle to the Walmart in Orange City, where she purposely crashed into a concrete pole in front of the store.
The CCTV footage released by Orange City police shows the woman struggling with officers and firefighters in front of Walmart while she is on her undergarments.
The body camera footage shows an officer approaching Barton standing in front of the Walmart with a white sheet wrapped around her midsection. Barton can be heard telling the officer, “I’m pregnant, I’m pregnant.”
The officer then handcuffs Barton and was seen struggling to get her to his patrol car. He needed assistance from several officers and even some firefighters. It was heard that the authorities told Barton to stop from resisting the arrest.
According to witnesses, the whole incident started in Sanford when Barton ran into the home of a friend on W. 13th Street screaming that someone was trying to kill her. She then took off her dress and jumped through the front window of the home.
Barton’s unidentified friend said he tried to detain Barton while he was calling 911 because he believes Barton has a history of mental health issues and he was hoping the local authorities would help her.
He recalled that after Barton left his home, she tried to steal a car that was parked out on the street. He said Barton then jumped into a second car, forced a male passenger and female driver out of that vehicle, and then took off.
Police said two drivers showed up at the Walmart to report that Barton had struck their cars at the intersection of Saxon and Veterans Memorial Parkway. The damage to their cars was estimated at $7,000.
Barton faces charges of robbery carjacking without a firearm, resisting an officer, and leaving the scene of a crash.
