Sgt. P.A. Bass was at a grocery store in St. Albans on an unrelated shoplifting call when he heard a child crying in the store’s bathroom.
Inside, he said he found a woman and a 14-month-old girl.
The woman, Donnyell Harrison, was arrested, charged with possession of drugs with the intent to distribute, WOWK reported.
Child Protective Services was notified, but there was a delay in getting an advocate to take care of the child.
Bass stepped in, buying small toys for the child, while other officers bought diapers and baby food.
The baby stayed with Bass until someone from CPS was able to take her.
