Trump’s Lawyer Says There Is Unusual ‘Silence’ From Special Counsel’s Team, Is Mueller Done?

As USA Today reports, the Trump legal defense team is predicting the unusual silence is an indicator that the special counsel is seeking to wrap up the investigation and release a final report. This final report could be released in the next two week, Giuliani said.

From the report:

Giuliani told USA TODAY that it’s been “weeks” since Mueller’s team has contacted the president’s attorneys, and there has been no further discussion about obtaining additional testimony from the president for about a month.

He said the extended period of “silence” has the president’s lawyers preparing for Mueller’s required notification to new Attorney General William Barr that the special counsel’s work has been completed.

“We expect something in the next two weeks,” Giuliani said.

He said the legal team has been preparing a report of its own that, depending on Mueller’s findings, may be made public.

Giuliani said his reaction to the Mueller’s final report will depend on what’s included.

“If (Mueller) clears the president, we walk away and say, ‘Thank you.’ If it is damaging, then we will respond,” the attorney said.

Giuliani’s comments that the Mueller investigation could be wrapping their investigation seemed to echo comments made by former Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker who said he was briefed on the investigation and that it was “close to being completed,” USA Today reports.

As for the final report, its fate is still unclear. While seemingly everyone is anticipating its release, the Justice Department has indicated they could keep it, or part of it under wraps.

From the Washington Examiner:

However, the timing of the report’s release could be impacted by Trump’s schedule, as he is slated to be in Vietnam for a second summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un next week.

Mueller is required to submit a confidential report to the attorney general after he wraps up his investigation. In the report, Mueller must explain why he decided to bring charges against or not prosecute any matters under investigation. Rules do not require the report to be shared with Congress or be made public, but Barr is required to inform Congress if the Justice Department prevented Mueller’s team from taking any action.
