Bali conjures up images of sandy beaches and gentle lapping Pacific Ocean waves.
However, a Brazilian teen who visited the island may face the firing squad after being charged with smuggling drugs onto the island.
Bali is a part of Indonesia, which has very strict drug laws.
As recently as 2016, four convicted drug smugglers were executed by a firing squad, according to CNN.

According to the New York Post, Manuela Vitoria de Araujo Farias, 19, is accused of having three kilograms of cocaine in her luggage when she arrived on Jan. 27.
Farias flew from Brazil to Bali via Qatar, but the drugs were not found during her stopover, according to the Post.
According to the Bali Times, the teen’s lawyer, Davi Lira da Silva, said the girl was duped into bringing the drugs to the island.
He claimed she was hired by a gang who told her she could have Buddhist prayers said for her mother, who had recently suffered a stroke, once she arrived in Bali.

“They said that she could pray in the temples to ask for her mother’s healing,” da Silva said.
According to Australia’s news.com, Australian tourist Jeffrey Welton, 52, faced the death penalty after being arrested in September and charged with bringing drugs to the island.

Welton was sentenced to eight months in rehab last month rather than being executed or placed on death row.
According to the Post, Welton’s lawyers were able to persuade authorities that Walton was an addict, not a smuggler.
According to the website BaliTraveler, possession of marijuana is illegal in Indonesia, unlike in many Western countries.
