A Texas judge has sentenced “affluenza” teen Ethan Couch to 720 days in jail after he violated the terms of his probation and fled to Mexico.
Couch was arrested in 2013 after driving while drunk and killing four people.
Despite the serious charges, Couch’s attorney argued that he could not be held responsible for his crimes because he lavishly wealthy and spoiled upbringing left him unable to understand that his actions have consequences.
A judge agreed and gave Couch probation, leading to a national outrage.
But two years later, video surfaced that appeared to show Couch drinking, a violation of his probation. When a warrant for his arrest was issued, Couch and his mother fled to Mexico, leading authorities on a manhunt that lasted for several days.
Media reports from inside the courtroom indicated that Judge Wayne Salvan was unswayed by the Couch attorneys’ plea for leniency. “You’re not getting out of jail today,” he told him.
