Following their alliance with transgender-identifying activist Dylan Mulvaney, Bud Light has continued to lose ground on other beers in terms of sales in America, falling from its long-held position as the country’s best-selling beer.
Modelo Especial, a Mexican beer owned in North America by Constellation Brands, has again outperformed the troubled beer brand, according to recent NielsenIQ data examined by Bump Williams consulting firm. Outside of North America, Modelo Especial is owned by Anheuser-Busch.
According to the statistics, Bud Light made up 7.3% of retail beer sales while Modelo Especial made up 8.4% for the week ending June 3, according to CNBC. According to the data, during the same period last year, Modelo Especial sales climbed by 10.2% while Bud Light sales decreased by 24.6%.
According to earlier reports, Modelo Especial sold more than $35 million worth of beer during a four-week period in May, which caused Bud Light to lose its top rank for the first time last month.
“Unless Bud Light starts to experience a serious course correction in terms of performance, which can only come from consumers finding their way back into the brand family, then that firm grip on the No. 1 rank by year-end loosens a bit more every week,” Dave Williams, a consultant for Bump Williams, told CBS MoneyWatch at the time.
He added that the company would need to rebound over the summer to avoid further major losses.
“Companies invest a lot into being front and center and top of mind during this season as there is only so much floor space to allocate; consumer money to spend and beer occasions to fulfill,” he said. “And if a brand misses those opportunities, then that is almost impossible to fully recover that lost potential over the balance of the calendar year.”
After partnering with Mulvaney, a man who identifies as a woman, conservatives and others urged consumers to boycott Bud Light, which had previously held the #1 slot.
Following the deal, Bud Light’s market value decreased by billions of dollars. Data examined at the end of May showed that the beer brand’s market worth dropped by a startling $15.7 billion.
According to some observers, the boycott appears to be here to stay for the “foreseeable future.”
“We believe there is a subset of American consumers who will not drink a Bud Light for the foreseeable future,” Jared Dinges, beverage analyst at JPMorgan Chase, said. “We believe a 12% to 13% volume decline on an annualized basis would be a reasonable assumption.”
