Police are searching for the parents of a 3-day-old baby girl who was found covered with ant bites in Russia after being abandoned.

The newborn baby, who still had an umbilical cord attached, was discovered by a passerby in the outskirts of Chelyabinsk. The man was on his way to work when he heard the baby crying, the Daily Mail reported.

According to reports, the baby girl was unlikely to survive much longer if she had not been found by the man, who decided to take a shortcut to work that day.

“The person that found the baby girl heard her crying and on investigating discovered the child lying on a pile of leaves and covered in ants,” a police spokesman said. “It was clear that the child had been abandoned and there was no one else in sight, so they picked her up and called for an ambulance.”

The baby was treated at a nearby hospital. She is now reportedly in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery. Police have launched a full investigation to track down the baby’s parents.

In 2012, 6,230 babies were reportedly abandoned in Russia, Kicker Daily reports.
