In the small Israeli town of Lod (Lydda) the Muslims blast the adhan (Call to prayer) very loudly and since the one call is extremely early in the morning and one is late at night, it disturbs the residents. The mosque has asked that the volume be turned down but they refused. But the city of Lod had something the mosque did not. Mayor Yair Revivo.
The mayor announced a new initiative. Every day when it was time for the call to prayer the city now blasts the Jewish song, “Shem Yisrael”, to drown out the adhan. No word on whether it has any effect on the mosque but the city is very patient and since they have to listen to one or the other, I’m sure “Shem Yisrael” would be their choice.
From The Conservative Tribune:
Aryeh Levi, a member of the city council, now sings the Jewish prayer over the loudspeakers during the Islamic adhan.
Revivo said it was his last resort to get the Muslim community to respect its neighbors.
“The use of loudspeakers for the call to prayer has over time turned into a national phenomenon, and causes much suffering and annoyance for residents, who are awakened from their slumber in the early morning hours and are subject to the call several times a day,” Revivo’s office said in a statement.
“Both Jews and Muslims who live near mosques have complained about the noise. The city has tried to limit this phenomenon using legal means, as the call to prayer is a serious violation of laws against noise, but so far we have been unsuccessful.”
