When you hear her tell it, you’d think that the 2016 presidential election results were hardest on actor, comedian, and author Chelsea Handler.
Although politicians like Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama took the loss to heart, it was Chelsea Handler who admitted that the election results drove her to seek psychiatric help and the assistance of psychotropic drugs to deal with the change in the American political landscape.
While on Real Time with Bill Maher, an HBO political talk show, Handler told the host that she went through a “midlife identity crisis” after Trump took the Whitehouse. After he won the election, Handler admitted that she never had in her life felt “so unhinged.” Things didn’t happen the way she had planned them out in her head, and she started to lose herself and her mind.
“I had to pay a psychiatrist to listen to me b**** about Donald Trump for about the first three weeks,” she told the host of the talk show. “And then once when we got past that and got to the real stuff, I realized the parallel there was my world becoming unhinged when I was a little girl. My brother died when I was nine-years-old. I had never related the two, but for me, as I can imagine it must have been for so many people, it was an emotional trigger of everything being destabilized, and I realized how spoiled and privileged I had been all my life and realized to be this upset and this on-a-ten every day and the outrage and the anger. I just wanted to f***ing fight people, you know? And I was like, ‘I have to go see a psychiatrist.’”
The comedian followed her gut instinct and sought out the help of a psychiatrist. As she described, she complained about the election of Trump for a while before getting to the real issues of her psychiatric need. That’s when she also started to dive into her feelings of “white guilt” and how she felt she didn’t have “the right to be in pain” because she had never been raped or molested. But that latter problem was one that had been holding her back, everyone hurts sometimes.
“I’m a more mindful citizen because of it, and I woke up. I’m in an awakening,” she told Maher.
Besides seeking psychiatric help, the election of Trump also “led” her to get addicted to smoking marijuana. She said that she stopped abusing alcohol and instead found that cannabis is the “getaway drug to meditation.” In that way, the election of Trump was a good thing for her because he led her to a more holistic life.
Now that Chelsea Handler has gotten some psychiatric help and is meditating more, she feels more confident in herself and in handling the world around her.
During her appearance on Bill Maher’s show, she was glad to get the chance to speak to fellow liberals about the struggles of accepting the presidency of Trump.
What do you think about her “breakthrough” following the election of the 45th president?
