A police officer in Georgia felt compelled to share his message with the world after witnessing a young black man’s behavior after being pulled over for texting and driving. What shocked the officer most was how petrified the young man was when he approached the vehicle. It must have touched him deeply, because not long after he posted about the incident hoping people would read it and reflect on what direction our country has taken.

According to BlueLivesMatter, Police officer Tim McMillan had just conducted a traffic stop after observing a young black male texting and driving. Upon approach of the vehicle, he was stunned at what he saw. McMillan went on to write in his post:

When I went to talk to the driver, I found a young black male, who was looking at me like he was absolutely terrified with his hands up.

He said, “What do you want me to do officer?” His voice was quivering. He was genuinely scared.

I just looked at him for a moment, because what I was seeing made me sad. I said, “I just don’t want you to get hurt.”

In which he replied, with his voice still shaking, “Do you want me to get out of the car.”

I said, “No, I don’t want you to text and drive. I don’t want you to get in a wreck. I want your mom to always have her baby boy. I want you to grow up and be somebody. I don’t even want to write you a ticket. Just please pay attention, and put the phone down. I just don’t want you to get hurt.”

Its obvious Lt. McMillan has many years of service and can tell when a person is genuinely upset or scared. McMillan saw something in this young man that made him question what our country has come to. Why is that someone is so terrified by the very people that are here to protect and serve them? McMillan’s post didn’t stop there, he would go on to add, “I truly don’t even care who’s fault it is that young man was so scared to have a police officer at his window. Blame the media, blame bad cops, blame protesters, or Colin Kaepernick if you want. It doesn’t matter to me who’s to blame. I just wish somebody would fix it.”

In a subsequent statement from McMillan, he points out the fact that because of that simple post, which has now been shared almost 140,000 times, some are questioning his motives:

Since my original post, I have experienced stress and sadness not for myself but as humans. I received negativity, questioning my motives, “how much do I really care”. I have had people say hateful and hurtful things to me. I have suddenly, had my family which means more to me than anything in this world thrust into the spot light. I’ve had to remove my children and wife’s pictures from public view. Because in the end, as much as I love all of you. I am nothing if I don’t live by what I say. I look myself in the mirror and say “What can I do to be better?” everyday. Ultimately, that begins with being a good husband and and most importantly father.
I have had people make condescending comments. I have had people pick a part the littlest details in my post. I have been accused of things that I never did, nor would I do.

McMillan shed to light the current state of our country and how far we have fallen. He did the right thing by speaking up and hopefully, dialogue can be created. We need to get back to what is right and black vs. white has no place in that world. What do you think about this brave officers message?
