A drunken prankster choked on a McDonald’s cheeseburger after a few too many drinks, and died as a result of struggling to breathe. Darren Bray, 29, father of three, passed out while trying to impress his friends by eating the burger in one bite. He turned to his friends and said “Hey, watch this,” and mashed the entire burger into his mouth. He then quickly “turned blue” and began to choke. His friends could see him trying to cough it up and he was making horrible coughing noises so they tried to hit his back to clear his airway. It didn’t work.
After it became clear that Bray was still choking, emergency medical services were called. When they arrived, they performed CPR on the Bray but to no avail. They were unable to restart his heart, and he was pronounced dead on the scene. Dr. Rhiannon Trefor told Cardiff Coroner’s Court that Bray died of an airway blockage. “When we did an internal examination there was a eight by five centimeter ball of food stuck at the back of his neck. Darren would not have been able to breath from that breath with that in his airway. Death would have followed quite quickly.”
This death was totally unnecessary and could have been avoided by less alcohol and not making stupid choices. Everyone be careful when you go out to fast food after a night of drinking, even a McDonalds burger can kill you.
