There’s good news for an Arizona high school football player who was ejected from a game after he pointed to the sky in celebration.

El Mirage Dysart senior running back Pedro Banda scored the game-winning touchdown last Friday, then looked up and pointed to the sky for about four seconds.

“I was just trying to thank God for everything that He’s given to me. For the power He has given to me to play the sport because not everyone can do it,” Banda said.

But an official interpreted his celebratory gesture as a form of taunting, rather than being a show of faith. He was flagged for excessive celebration.

Since Banda had already been flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, he was ejected, triggering a one-game suspension.

The school appealed to the Arizona Interscholastic Association and they agreed today that the gesture should not have been considered a taunt.

Banda’s suspension was overturned, so he will now get to play in the school’s first playoff game since 1994.
