Leftist oligarch George Soros claims he did not fund Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, the prosecutor behind former President Donald Trump’s indictment.
Soros stated as much in a text message sent to Semafor’s Steve Clemons on Friday.
The Hungarian-born billionaire stressed that he does not personally know Bragg.
“As for Alvin Bragg … I did not contribute to his campaign and I don’t know him,” he wrote.
“I think some on the right would rather focus on far-fetched conspiracy theories than on the serious charges against the former President.”
However, the story is more complicated than Soros’ partial denial.
The leftist megadonor is the largest individual contributor to Color of Change, a Super PAC that heavily supported Bragg’s 2021 presidential campaign.
Soros gave $1 million to the group just days after it endorsed Bragg in 2021, with the expectation that his contributions would be used to help Bragg win.
According to The New York Times, Color of Change spent approximately $500,000 in support of Bragg.
Direct contributions to campaigns in excess of $3,300 are prohibited under campaign finance law, a figure that has risen since Bragg’s 2021 campaign.
In a Friday tweet, Soros emphasized that he had not contributed directly to Bragg’s campaign while ignoring his funding of a PAC that supported him.

Soros is well-known for his focus on local prosecutor elections, bragging in a 2022 Wall Street Journal op-ed about his support for “reform” candidates.
Those who call Bragg’s indictment of Donald Trump a politically motivated prosecution point to his financial ties to Soros, a multibillionaire who has established himself as one of the most important financiers of progressive politics in the United States.
As a prosecutor, Bragg has downgraded and avoided charging those accused of violent crimes, while seemingly emphasizing a politically charged investigation into the former Republican president.

According to CNN, Trump is scheduled to appear in a Manhattan courtroom on Tuesday for arraignment proceedings.
