Whoever said that liberals lose their minds when it comes to gun control, had State Rep. Sonya Harper, D-Chicago in mind. She has come up with an idea that any gun owner would laugh at. She wants serial numbers on bullets. Funnier still, several other liberals are solidly behind her. She seems to believe that by placing serial numbers on bullets, police would be able to track down who bought them.
Where would the serial number go? It couldn’t be placed on the bullet itself because they often get damaged beyond recognition. So, then it would have to be placed on the casing. The problem with that is that revolvers don’t eject the casing. And even guns that do eject casings, it could not really help if the criminal steals the ammunition or they go to any shooting range and pick up old casings to scatter around on the ground in order to get the police to chase their tails looking for some innocent schmuck who just likes to target practice.
From The Conservative Tribune:
Casings can also be reloaded and used several times, meaning one serial number could be associated with up to half a dozen or more fired projectiles. New products now entering the market promise far greater durability.
And then there’s the probability that Illinois residents living close to the state line would simply purchase ammunition in other states.
In short, Harper and her supporters have decided to create a law without having the most basic technical knowledge of their subject. They might just as well have sent criminals a love letter promising them infinite opportunities to camouflage their activities, pin the blame on the innocent and frustrate the police.
When the already-high crime rate skyrockets in Harper’s district, will she blame herself or that evil old gun lobby? We shall see — unless the Illinois General Assembly comes to its senses and votes the ridiculous measure down.
