James Comey has come forward with an explanation of why he reopened the case and why he reported to congress on the latest move. I will report on Comey and his explanation and then I will offer you an alternative explanation.
Here is Comey’s explanation:
This morning I sent a letter to Congress in connection with the Secretary Clinton email investigation. Yesterday, the investigative team briefed me on their recommendation with respect to seeking access to emails that have recently been found in an unrelated case. Because those emails appear to be pertinent to our investigation, I agreed that we should take appropriate steps to obtain and review them.
Of course, we don’t ordinarily tell Congress about ongoing investigations, but here I feel an obligation to do so given that I testified repeatedly in recent months that our investigation was completed. I also think it would be misleading to the American people were we not to supplement the record.
At the same time, however, given that we don’t know the significance of this newly discovered collection of emails, I don’t want to create a misleading impression. In trying to strike that balance, in a brief letter and in the middle of an election season, there is significant risk of being misunderstood, but I wanted you to hear directly from me about it.
That’s his explanation and he’s sticking to it. Now let me offer you a completely different explanation. Back in June and July, Comey was under heavy pressure to exonerate Hillary and he was between a rock and a hard place like so many other Americans have found themselves such as Thomas Jefferson, Ben Franklin, Abe Lincoln, JFK and others. Unlike them however, Comey chose the easy way out and didn’t expect the backlash he received.
Throughout his professional life, Comey had earned a reputation as a tough but fair investigator, respected by both sides until his refusal to recommend charges against Hillary. His reputation had a permanent stain on it. This became an opportunity for him to revive it and he’s taking it. Several facts have led me to this conclusion. He gave no advance notice to the White House or his boss Loretta Lynch. That kept them from stopping the new investigation. The timing also fits. This close to the election means that Trump could win and Comey would be able to go after Hillary with impunity.
If Hillary wins, he will be forced out but would be seen as a martyr. Neither Obama or Lynch can afford to chance firing him in case Trump wins and charges them with obstruction of justice.
One thing in Comey’s letter that I am convinced is a total lie is when he says they do not know the significance of the emails. I don’t believe he would reopen the investigation unless one of two things happened. He found a bombshell in the emails or it was discovered that Julian Assange and Wikileaks is about to dump bombshell emails next week and Obama wants to inoculate himself from the scandal.
Time will tell.
