The entire football team at Bonnabel High School took a knee during the National Anthem. As a result Jefferson Parish deputies have taken a knee and are refusing to work the games. Security details at the games is voluntary and deputies are not required to work them. The sheriff says it’s not a problem because he has deputies willing to take their place. Maybe for now, but if you have a job where you depend on others to watch your back, it’s not wise to oppose them.
The players are copying has been NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who will be out of the NFL permanently after the last day of the season. The NFL ratings have gone into the tank as more and more NFL players take a knee. Soon, colleges and NFL teams will find these players much less desirable if they are going to have a profound effect on their bottom line. The players definitely have the constitutional right to take a knee but they have no constitutional protections against the blowback from their decision.
Sheriff Newell Normand said:
“My understanding is we’ve had some officers that said they will not work the Bonnabel High football games.”
“I understand why, in light of Colin Kaepernick’s comments, specifically when he says, ‘Cops are getting paid leave for killing people.’ That’s not right, that’s not right by anyone’s standards. The fact of the matter is we risk our lives each and every day for the safety and security of our constituency throughout this country.”
These players could pay a heavy price for being liberal chic.
