Alegria Martinez, a Pitzer College Resident Assistant and member of the Latinx Student Union has declared that white women can’t wear hoop earrings because it is culture appropriation from blacks and Hispanic.
“[T]he art was created by myself and a few other WOC [women of color] after being tired and annoyed with the reoccuring [sic] theme of white women appropriating styles … that belong to the black and brown folks who created the culture. The culture actually comes from a historical background of oppression and exclusion. The black and brown bodies who typically wear hooped earrings, (and other accessories like winged eyeliner, gold name plate necklaces, etc) are typically viewed as ghetto, and are not taken seriously by others in their daily lives. Because of this, I see our winged eyeliner, lined lips, and big hoop earrings serving as symbols [and] as an everyday act of resistance, especially here at the Claremont Colleges.”
She is right, it is culture appropriation, but the difference is she is doing the appropriation.
The progress of this particular earring has made its way around different cities and cultures. The first ever hoop earring have been linked to the Sumerian culture, which is now known as Iraq. They then became popular in Egypt, Greece, and Rome.
From The US Herald:
All of these cultures were created by white people, black claims to Egyptian civilization to the contrary. After a bit of sleuthing you will discover that hooped earrings figured prominently among the female attire worn as early as 2,500 B.C.E. — long before any significant cultural contact with “black and brown folks” Alegria Martinez likes to throw about.
It’s no different from if one were to claim that white people (if they still exist) 2,500 years from now had culturally appropriated the sport of basketball. How could one think otherwise, given all the images of black basketball players that make up the archaeological record?
These racial intellectual assaults on the white student body at Pitzer College are but harbingers of the tyranny to come.
So, as of today, all blacks and Hispanics must quit wearing hoop earrings.
