LIVE NOW— McCaskill leads Senate hearing on local police militarization

(KTVI) – The situation in Ferguson will take center stage Tuesday in Washington, D.C.  Senator Claire McCaskill will lead a hearing into the militarization of state and local police departments.

You can expect to hear a lot of perspectives from different players involved with the issue including local law enforcement.

All is quiet in Ferguson now, but there were many of those violent clashes between police and protesters happened after the Michael Brown shooting.

In the wake of the shooting, McCaskill called for police to demilitarize their response in the confrontations with protestors.

You`ll recall those incredible scenes where police were in armored vehicles with their weapons drawn.

Many other officers were walking in full riot gear with their weapons out throwing tear gas and smoke bombs at protestors.

All of that was in an effort to control large, emotional crowds. Some protestors threw Molotov cocktails at police and others in the crowd had guns and fired shots in the area.

McCaskill says the hearing will examine federal programs that enable local police departments to acquire military equipment.

There are all kinds of people set to testify but only one St. Louisan highlighted — a photojournalist from the St. Louis American newspaper.
