Missouri politics are just getting weirder and weirder. Today’s blockbuster involves a sex scandal between the Speaker of the House and an intern. Yeah, I know. You’ve heard this before. Except this time it’s the Republicans who are at the center of the controversy.
Missouri, while ruled by a Democrat in the governor’s mansion, has a super majority of Republicans in the House and Senate.
February and March saw two suspicious deaths, by suicide, of leading Republican figures within weeks of each other, and now the leading Republican of the House has admitted to an inappropriate relationship with a 19 year old college intern.
Here’s the rundown on the story.
John Diehl, is serving his first term as Speaker in the Missouri House. There was a grassroots effort to keep Diehl out of the Speaker’s chair, but as most establishment Republican processes go, he who raises the most money gets the power positions. The grassroots effort was defeated.
The Missouri legislative session begins in January and runs through mid May. This year, they adjourn on May 15. Today, May 13, the story broke. The 49 year old, married, father of three Speaker has been sex-texting his 19 year old, college intern. The same day the story broke, Diehl issued a statement admitting to the allegations.

Here are transcripts of some of the texts between Diehl and the intern:
Her: “You better take care of me.”
Diehl: “Like how?”
Her: “I’ll bet you’ll figure it out.”
Diehl: “I dunno. You have always been disappointed;)”
Her: “I just have high expectations, I guess. Thus far, you’ve done pretty well (an emoji blows a kiss)”
Diehl: “:). I kinda want to hear what you are expecting”
Then, shortly after, he types: “You will be in good hands :)”
At one point Diehl texts her “God I want you right now,” to which she replies “I wish you could have me right now.”
In another exchange, she sends a picture of herself in a bikini and Diehl responds: “Damn girl …”
“Nice”
Shortly after he writes: “I want to see more” followed by a smiling emoji.
Another exchange centered on Diehl texting that he was “Laying in bed looking at your pic :)”
She responded: “Mmmmm why can’t I be there :)”
Diehl shared photos as well, including one apparently taken while he was on a trade mission to Europe with Gov. Jay Nixon. The picture shows the speaker standing next to a luxury car in Munich, Germany.
“Munich is a cool place,” he says.
“That suit and tie combo is sexy and you look great,” she responds. “I see a lot of work is happening.
Almost immediately, a petition was started to get Diehl out of office. MissouriNet News shares the video.
So, Republicans are no more immune from sex scandal than Democrats, in Missouri. The only thing missing, at this point, is a blue dress. And Needless to say, the end of the Missouri legislative session will be focused on more than passing Right to Work. Stay tuned for details.
