The video below was created a few years ago by the city of Bothell in Washington. It’s a public service announcement, and the importance of its message cannot be emphasized enough.
The video is directed to mothers of newborn babies and provides a warning of how babies should sleep. The common rule is for babies to sleep in their own cribs, but this doesn’t happen often enough. When the woman in the video sleeps next to her baby, it becomes clear how important it is for babies to sleep alone.
This video is aimed to reduce the number of deaths caused by sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). SIDS is currently the leading cause of death for babies 1-year-old and younger, and most cases occur while the baby is sleeping. While there are supporters who believe that sharing a bed with a baby is beneficial, there are indeed a number of risks that arise with it, as evidenced by this video. A baby is at risk for suffocation or strangulation when sleeping in a bed with blankets and pillows. The reality of these risks is very frightening, and it can’t be overstated.
