A mother-of-five was left disgusted after she found what she believed was a scaley “creature” inside a tin of baked beans when preparing a meal for her daughter.
Donna Marie Frater, 36, from Peterlee, County Durham, opened the tin of Branston baked beans when she saw the large and scaly lump, which she believe might be some kind of animal. Ms. Frater, a hairdresser, was preparing beans on toast for her daughter Cali on Monday night using the tin of beans she brought from Farmfoods’ Peterlee branch around a fortnight ago.
She was left with no appetite and is now desperate to find out exactly what her finding is. Branson is investigating, but the company says the foreign object “appears to be mould” that probably formed after the can was damaged.
“I took a picture of it and put it on Facebook to see if anyone could help identify it. “People have said it could be a slug, a leaf, mould, fungus, a dead frog or a snake skin. Some people think it might be a creature.“I have no idea what it is but know I will never eat baked beans again.”
The hairdresser has contacted Branston to try and establish what she found rather than making a complaint. A spokesman for Branston Beans said: “We are speaking with Donna to get more information so we can investigate her complaint.
“It would appear to be mould that has developed due to damage to the can resulting in a small perforation that has allowed air to enter – this being an extremely rare occurrence. “We will advise Donna once our investigation is completed and sincerely apologise for any concern this has caused.”
