Presidential Hopeful, Jeb Bush Believes Retirement Age Should Be Raised
Potential Republican presidential candidate and former Florida governor Jeb Bush said in an interview with CBS that he feels the retirement age should be raised from 65 to “68 or 70.”
On CBS’s “Face The Nation” Sunday, Bush said that the age of retirement and Social Security eligibility, currently 65 years old, should be raised.
“I think it needs to be phased in over an extended period of time,” he said. “We need to look over the horizon and begin to phase in, over an extended period of time, going from 65 to 68 or 70. And that, by itself, will help sustain the retirement system for anybody under the age of 40.”
Bush also acknowledged his potential support for means testing, a reform proposal that cuts benefits for wealthy americans and their beneficiaries.
“I think it ought to be considered, for sure,” he said.
Bush is one of a large number of Republicans who have supported raising the retirement age, as many believe Social Security to be a significant contributor to the country’s deficit.
