14-year-old Ekaterina, was waiting for her brother on a deserted railway platform in the Russian resort of Sochi, (where the most recent Winter Olympics Took place) when she was attacked. It is a horrible story to report but has to be told for safety sake for others. In this day and age stay alert to your surroundings, if possible, travel with someone else, always guard yourself.
Her last moments traveling home after a summer camp disco were caught in gruesome detail by an infrared security camera.
On the footage, Sergey Tkhorov, 33 – who had just been released from jail after serving a sentence for a violent attack and robbery, can be seen apparently asking Ekaterina for directions.
She points to show him the way, but then he suddenly assaults her, putting his arm around her neck and strangling her.
He drags her on to the railway tracks, stumbling, before pulling her to the ground and hitting her with an object believed to be a brick.
The schoolgirl fought back but he forced her onto the railway track at Magri station in the Lazarevsky district of Sochi.
He grabbed a blunt object and struck her on the head.
Seriously injured, she continued to fight after he dragged her onto a patch of grass, striking him on his back.
Police said the man – dubbed a “maniac” by the Russian media – then attempted but failed to rape her moments after killing her.
Watch the terrifying footage here:
This can happen anywhere at any time, but the question is, in hindsight, should this man have been released from prison? How did he slip through the cracks, who, if anyone else should be held accountable? A lot of questions need to be answered. What do you think?
