There have been many shootings at schools over the last 40 years and in every case the school was a gun free zone. Medina Independent School District was no different until recently. The school district is located out in the boonies and there are few police that can answer a distress call and it could take them too long to respond. That’s why they got the idea for a different sign they think will deter any would be shooter.
‘I think that anybody who might have a thought about harming someone in mind might think twice about it,’ school superintendent Penny White told KSAT-TV.
White said that the sign was aimed not just at potential shooters but also anyone who may resort to violence on school grounds, like divorcing parents seeking to take their children without consent.
‘You never know if there’s a transient or someone who has zeroed in on harming a child,’ White said.
She said the school’s remote rural location was also a motivating factor.
‘We’re 20 minutes or 25 minutes from Bandera,’ she told KSAT. ‘That’s our closest law enforcement.’
