School Suspends Boy for Saving a Life

I have heard some crazy reasons for suspending students, but this one has got to be the dumbest one yet.  A boy, Anthony Ruelas, 15,, performed an act that may very well have saved the life of a girl in his class after she collapsed from an asthma attack.  The girl had earlier complained about not being able to breath, but the teacher merely sent an email to the nurse’s office and let it go at that.  Three or four minutes passed and the girl fell to the floor.  Not willing to match his classmate die, Anthony picked the girl up and carried her to the nurse’s office, where she was attended to.

This is where it gets insane.  His teacher wrote him up for insubordination. Here is her account of the incidet, which by the way is the same as the boy’s:

“During 5th period another student complained that she couldn’t breathe and was having an asthma attack. As I waited for a response from the nurse the student fell out of her chair to the floor.  Anthony proceeded to go over and pick her up, saying ‘f— that we ain’t got time to wait for no email from the nurse.’ He walks out of class and carries the other student to the nurse.”

Anthony’s mother, Mandy Cortes has complained about the treatment of her son.  She said that perhaps his language was rude and crude but under the circumstances and with the teacher unwilling to do anything to aid her student, while playing Russian roulette with her life, I’m sure I’d have been cursing, too.  Anthony has served his suspension and has returned to school, but his mother says she is now considering home schooling.  The classmate he helped sent Anthony a message thanking him for saving her life.

I don’t know how you see it but I think our schools need a hell of a lot more Anthony’s and an even far less number of trachers and school administrators that saw fit to suspend this young hero.
