When she asserted the ridiculous claim that parental rights terminate when children enter the public school system, a Florida teacher verified conservatives’ worst fears.

A fifth-grade teacher at Winding Waters K-8 in Hernando County, north of Tampa, Jenna Barbee, claimed that parents shouldn’t object to her decision to show their kids a Disney movie with an openly gay main character because their “rights are gone when your child is in the public school system.”

Students in the fifth-grade range in age from 10 to 11 years old.

“What she [a Christian mom who complained] is missing — and what these parents are missing — is they’re not in the school system,” Barbee told CNN on Tuesday. “That just shows me that she’s ignorant and has not come and volunteered at all.”

“These conversations, these doors that she’s talking about — telling you I’m stripping her rights as a parent — those rights are gone when your child is in the public school system because there are students talking about these things.”

In essence, Barbee said that regardless of how parents felt, she should introduce the subjects to fifth-graders because they are already talking about sex, gender identity, and homosexuality among themselves.

This sounds disturbingly like the practice of rushing to share your version of events with others in order to sway their judgment before hearing a competing account.

The Parental Rights in Education Act of Florida, which prohibits classroom instruction on sexual orientation or gender identity in grades kindergarten through twelve, appears to be broken by showing the pro-LGBT movie to fifth graders.

Teachers who violate the law risk having their teaching licenses suspended or revoked.

An investigator will look into the allegation against Barbee, according to Cassie Palelis, press secretary for the Florida Department of Education, CNN reported on Monday.

The debate started last week when Shannon Rodriguez, a Christian mother whose daughter attends Barbee’s class, spoke out against the educator’s video selection during a school board meeting on May 9, according to the publication.

“It is not a teacher’s job to impose their beliefs upon a child: Religious, sexual orientation, gender identity, any of the above,” said Rodriguez, who’s also a member of the school board.

“But allowing movies such as this assist[s] teachers in opening a door — and please hear me — they assist teachers in opening a door for conversations that have no place in our classrooms,” she said.

At the board meeting, Barbee responded by taking a dig at Rodriguez’s Christian faith.

“A school board member, an elected official of power who was supposed to be nonpartisan, is allowed to present to the public that she is Christian and that God appointed her to the board. And yet it is ‘indoctrination’ that I showed a Disney movie,” she said.

Barbee implied inanely that a person professing to be a Christian is comparable to indoctrination with this naive analogy.

Of course, the US Constitution upholds freedom of religion as a civic right. Declaring that you are a Christian is not “indoctrination”; it is a constitutional right that every American enjoys.

Additionally, Barbee mockingly evoked American ideals when she complained that Rodriguez’s criticism of her decision to play a pro-LGBT movie to kids was “ruining everything.”

“They’re trying to strip individuality and diversity to fit one common agenda, and it’s ruining everything,” she told CNN.

“It’s not what America stands for.”

When liberals assert that they promote “diversity” while attempting to silence differing viewpoints on Christian or conservative principles, it is absurd.
