On Thursday, Republican Governor Bill Lee of Tennessee signed a new bill into law that exempts teachers in the Volunteer State from having to pay union dues and improves teacher salaries.

The Teacher Paycheck Protection Act forbids teachers’ unions from automatically deducting money from their employee’s paychecks and mandates that the minimum annual salary for teachers be $50,000 by 2026. Teachers’ unions in the state have come under fire for their political activism, and lawmakers there have attempted for years to get rid of the required union dues.

Lee stated in a video:

“We’re also making sure that teachers actually receive their well-deserved raises and that union membership dues are never automatically deducted from teacher paychecks. Teachers should have control over their hard-earned paycheck and taxpayer dollars should be used to educate students and not fund politics,” 

The Tennessee Education Association (TEA), the state’s largest teacher union, gave more than $500,000 to political candidates in 2018 while also bringing in more than $9 million, claim the bill’s proponents.

With a Left-leaning stance on everything from COVID laws to charter schools, TEA has recently entered hotly debated political matters. The TEA has spoken out against legislation for charter schools and opposed a 2021 bill that would have prohibited the teaching of Critical Race Theory in the classroom.

The law was supported by the conservative organization Americans for Prosperity Tennessee while it made its way through the General Assembly. Both House Majority Leader William Lamberth (R-Portland) and Senate Majority Leader Jack Johnson (R-Franklin) sponsored it.

“Teachers are tasked with the incredibly important job of educating the next generation,” Johnson said in a statement. “This legislation recognizes the importance of teachers’ work by raising their pay and protecting their paychecks. It will also enhance the quality of our education system by helping attract and retain talented teachers.”

The base pay for teachers would climb steadily until the 2026–2027 academic year when it would be $50,000. Lee characterized the wage raise as “the largest pay raise in Tennessee history” for teachers, adding that it made Tennessee “a top ten state for teacher pay.”

Another bill backer, Sen. Bill Powers (R-Clarksville), claimed that it would “mitigate teacher shortages.”

This year, Tennessee Republicans also approved legislation that tightens restrictions on the availability of pornographic books in the state’s educational institutions.

The woke agenda is being promoted everywhere.
