Many people have dreamt about attending their own funeral, but not as the person being buried or cremated but rather as a fly on the wall, so to speak, eager to see and hear what people say and do.
Last weekend, Liege, Belgium resident David Baerten pulled off that in a stunt he documented on his TikTok account.
According to Google, Baerten, 45, goes by “Ragnar le Fou” on social media, which may be translated as “Ragnar the fool” or “madman,” and he intended to use the act to provoke thought in his family, according to an article in The Times of London on Tuesday.
“What I see in my family often hurts me,” he said. “I never get invited to anything. Nobody sees me. We all grew apart.
“That’s why I wanted to give them a life lesson and show them that you shouldn’t wait until someone is dead to meet up with them.”
According to The Times, the Belgian “TikTokeur,” or TikTok content producer, hired a helicopter to help him arrive at the occasion in style, shocking the friends and family members who were waiting for the burial to commence.
Some were surprised, but Baerten’s wife and kids were in on the secret.
The news was shared on social media by one of his daughters along with a note regarding his “passing.”
“Rest in peace Daddy. I will never stop thinking about you,” she wrote. “Why is life so unfair? Why you? You were going to be a grandfather, and you still had your whole life ahead of you. I love you! We love you! We will never forget you.”
According to the U.K.’s Independent, Baerten claimed that he came up with the concept because he felt “unappreciated” by some family members on a French talk program.
When they learned that the rumors of his death had been significantly exaggerated, his family, friends, and TikTok users reacted in different ways.
According to the Independent, “the prank did not sit well with viewers, and many people [criticized] Baerten for being ‘cruel’ to his family.”
“That’s just wrong,” one TikTok user complained.
“The ego on this guy must be tremendous,” another remarked.
“Now we know why people didn’t like him,” yet another said.

According to The Times, Baerten insisted that the stunt’s outcome was favorable. His pretty direct hint prompted several of his relatives to get in touch with him.
Those who didn’t attend the funeral did get in touch with me to arrange a meeting, which shows who actually cares about me, he claimed. I did, in a sense, win.
