For most of us, the eggs we crack open in the mornings aren’t anything unusual or newsworthy, but one man recently recorded a video of his “special” egg that has people amazed.
Gary Ashmore recently found an unusually large egg underneath his hen, Gertrude, but it wasn’t the first time. In fact, she had produced these rare eggs at least five other times, according to LittleThings.
But this time, Ashmore recorded a video of himself opening the egg so that those of us who live to have our minds blown by bizarre videos on the internet could see the strange occurrence inside.
See that red blob inside the egg? Do you know what it is?
When a hen releases an oocyte from her left ovary into her oviduct, the oocyte usually travels down the oviduct, adding layers of the egg until it’s laid through the hen’s vent.
However, in a counter-peristalsis contraction, a second oocyte is released by the ovary before the first egg has completed its journey, so when it is released, the first is still in the eggshell-producing portion of the oviduct.
Thus, the first egg is added to the second oocyte, which then travels down the oviduct and is covered in a shell, creating a giant egg around the first one.
In case you were wondering, these extra large eggs aren’t much different from their regular-sized counterparts. In fact, Ashmore noted that they taste exactly the same.
