For years, Maxine Waters and Sheila Jackson Lee have vied for the title of most ignorant legislator in Congress, with Lee winning almost every time. But Waters, just like the Cubs, surprised everyone by winning the world title in 2016. On Monday she was on with MSNBC correspondent Jacob Soboroff. She told Soboroff that the problem with the democratic party is that when they are in power they are too nice and agreeable. In what alternative universe?
Waters was asked if the democrats were being “too nice” when they said they would try to find common ground with Trump. Waters answered:
“That has been a problem in my party, that when we’re in power we’re nice. We bend over backwards to work with people.”
The truth is that many members of Congress want to work with Trump for only one reason….survival. The 2018 elections are vitally important for democrats. They cannot afford to look like obstructionists , especially if Trump does very well. They do not want to be seen as a roadblock to job creation and cutting spending and taxes. That would make them seem very replaceable.
After Nancy Pelosi took over as Speaker of the House, republicans were not allowed to sit in on bill writing and in fact moderates within the democratic party were banned also. Republicans in both chambers were not allowed to offer amendments. How Waters equates that to being too nice, I haven’t a clue.
