Three years ago, the world nearly witnessed an assassination on live tv and the video remains just as shocking today as it was then. Watch below as in 2013, the leader of Bulgaria’s ethnic Turkish political party was giving a routine speech when an assassin attempted to murder him. Ahmad Dogan was in the middle of addressing a large crowd when a man suddenly emerged from the audience and took to the stage, rushing towards the surprised politician. The assassin pointed a small handgun at point-blank range to Dogan’s head and pulled the trigger, but it didn’t fire. The pistol had apparently jammed or misfired, and the assassin was unable to clear the malfunction and attempt another shot before he was swarmed by a crowd of security officials, Dogan’s aides and other politicians. The failed assassin was tackled at the edge of the stage by the crowd of officials and was ruthlessly punched and kicked repeatedly about the head and body as he tried to wrestle away from the men holding him and make his escape. The beating continued for some time, as elderly men seemingly took turns stepping up and whacking at the attempted assassin with canes and other objects as he was held down on the ground.

This Bulgarian-Turk politician nearly lost his life to an attempted murder and was only saved by the luck of an apparent random misfire of the assassin’s weapon. Ahmad Dogan no doubt gave thanks for his life that day.
