So how is the “Try That in a Small Town” social exclusion zone going?
On Monday, the country song debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles list, giving Jason Aldean his first single to reach the top of the chart weeks after his popular song was criticized for being a “dog whistle” for racial “violence” by multiple mainstream media outlets after its video was released.
This is the first time that country music has occupied the top three positions on the wider singles chart, according to a Billboard report on Monday unveiling the most recent Hot 100. Additionally, more than your typical homage to pickup trucks or small-town life, all three of the top songs and/or singers are ones that the left finds particularly infuriating.
The unstoppable Morgan Wallen, an artist who has outraged progressives, came in at No. 2 with “Last Night.”
Luke Combs’ “Fast Car,” which debuted at No. 3, has caused controversy among liberal media since it features a working-class male cis white teenager singing a song written by a black female LGBT songwriter.
Aldean made a huge advance this week from No. 2 to No. 1, though. According to Billboard, “Try That” saw a 165 percent increase in streams from the previous week and a 21 percent increase in radio airplay impressions, but a 23 percent decline in straight-up sales.
At that lower position, the song still tops the digital sales list, and it climbed from No. 37 to No. 3 in terms of streaming tracks.
Additionally, less than a month shy of 18 years separated Aldean’s debut entry on the Hot 100 from his first No. 1 song, breaking the previous record.
Aldean has had 40 entries on the Hot 100 since “Hicktown” made its chart debut on August 13, 2005, but none of them have reached the top of the charts.
And ascension happened because of debate rather than in spite of it.
“On July 18, Billboard confirmed that CMT had pulled the official video for ‘Try That in a Small Town’ after three days in rotation; the network declined to say why. Following CMT’s decision, Aldean posted a message to his Instagram Stories regarding the contrasting reactions that the song and video have faced,” Billboard noted.
“The song’s video was released on July 14, featuring footage of an American flag burning, protesters in confrontation with police, looters breaking a display case and thieves robbing a convenience store; it has since been edited, cutting six seconds. The clip has prompted a firestorm of opinions about it and the song’s intent and messaging.”
That “firestorm of opinions” included a denunciation by Rolling Stone — a music publication that once defended the singer behind “Cop Killer,” Ice-T. Because apparently “try that in a small town / see how far you make it down the road” is much more offensive than “cop killer, I know your momma’s grieving (f*** her!) / cop killer, but tonight we get even, yeah! / Die, die, die pig, die / F*** the police, f*** the police, f*** the police, f*** the police.”

While the music industry continues to wring its hands, Americans continue to express their opinions through the music they listen to, which, once again, places country music at the top of a chart that often features pop bands in its upper echelons.
The media’s goal failed, as Brittany Aldean highlighted on Instagram.
“Well, yesterday was a monumental day for @jasonaldean,” she wrote Tuesday. “#1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart!!
“A career first,” she said, before adding: “That sure did backfire, didn’t it?? The best fans EVERRRR.”
To the chagrin of mainstream and legacy music publications, who are more than prepared to defend the most vile music as long as it supports their perspective, Jason Aldean is being attacked over a relatively unimportant song solely because it contradicts that paradigm.
