Democrats voted to delay the election of their party leaders in the House. Increasingly, democrats are becoming convinced that Nancy Pelosi at the top of the democrats in the house assures them that they will be perpetually in the minority. The democrats had a tight hold on the House but Pelosi became unpopular and republicans used her to define the party and snatch the House back. Steve Israel used a strategy whereby they would run moderates and those moderates numbered in the thirties and gave the democrats the majority.
Pelosi then adopted a policy, where she wouldn’t even answer the calls of the moderates. In the next election almost every one of them lost their seat and the democrats lost the House. Republicans increased their lead every 2 years until 2016, when democrats were expected to win a net 20 seats. They didn’t even come close to those numbers. That is why Pelosi is in danger.
“This isn’t about the past election,” said Rep. Tim Ryan of Ohio, who has been urged to run for a leadership post. “This is about the next election, and what do the leaders look like, what does the message sound like, in order for us to pick up the seats we need to get back into the majority.”
Donald Trump’s win over Hillary Clinton and the Republicans’ defense of their majorities in the House and Senate has forced Democrats to do some soul-searching over the direction of the party, and set the stage intra-party battles pitting some of the party’s old guard against those calling for new blood.
The decision to put off a vote on leadership posts in the House comes as the race to become the next leader of the Democratic National Committee heats up.
If Pelosi loses her job, look for her to resign from the House. Talk about a win/win situation.
